Author Jennifer Kramer
Today, we’re celebrating Jennifer Kramer’s wonderful debut in nonfiction OCEAN HIDE AND SEEK (Sylvan Dell). Jennifer loves spending time outdoors and believes children make the very best nature guides. She graduated with a BA from Emory University and a JD/MBA from Georgia State University. It was at Emory that Jennifer obtained her NAUI scuba certification. Her first dive trip was to a rock quarry in Alabama, where there were no sea animals. Since then, she has snorkeled and dived off Maui, the Caymans, and the coast of Cozumel. She loves to talk about coming face-to-face with a white tipped reef shark!
In addition to Ocean Hide and Seek (Spring 2009), Jennifer has also written fiction books Good Luck Charlie and The Ninth Dragon. She has fiction and non-fiction stories and articles published with Highlights for Children, Ladybug, Educational Testing, McGraw Hill, and more. Jennifer currently resides in Georgia, with her husband, four children, and a standard poodle named Max.
Here’s a little bit about OCEAN HIDE AND SEEK.

OCEAN HIDE AND SEEK by Jennifer Kramer
The sea is a place of mystery, where animals big and small play hide-and-seek! Can you imagine a shark hiding in the light? What about a clownfish in plain sight? Don’t believe it? Then, sink into the deep blue sea with Jennifer Evans Kramer and Ocean Hide and Seek! Surround yourself with the vibrant ocean illustrations of Gary R. Phillips. The ocean is an old, old place, and the exotic animals in the depths have learned to adapt to their surroundings to survive. Can you find the creatures hidden on every page? Or will you, too, be fooled by an ancient, underwater disguise?
If you had to give your book a movie rating: G through Rated R, which one would you give and why?
‘R’ for Really Fun! No, seriously it is a picture book, and is definitely a ‘G’.
What topics, issues, or themes does your book address? What drove you to write about them?
Our seas are home to some of the earth’s most valuable treasures, an abundance of plant and animal life that we are just beginning to learn about and understand. Education is the first step to preserving this ecosystem and providing future generations with a priceless legacy.
Name three examples of readers who would identify or like your book.
- A preschooler who loves to play I Spy or hide-and-seek.
- A first or second grader about to take a trip to the beach or aquarium.
- Anyone who loves to explore nature and learn fascinating facts about animals.
List a few statistically improbable phrases or sentences one might find in your book. These are phrases or sentences you might never find anywhere else.
- “A seaweed curtain bears its prize / a tiny dragon in disguise.”
- “Along the reef, a brilliant moon/ reveals a queen in her cocoon.”
How can your book be used in the classroom?
Absolutely! OCEAN HIDE AND SEEK is tied to the elementary school curriculum and can be a wonderful introduction to animal grouping, habitats, and adaptations. It is even better before or after a trip to a local aquarium where children can start their own game of hide-and-seek with the animals!
Now tell us about other already-published books that readers of your book might enjoy.
Kids who like OCEAN HIDE AND SEEK might also enjoy SOMEWHERE IN THE OCEAN by Jennifer Ward or OCEAN SEASONS by Ron Hirschi. Fans of I SPY books and books that present non-fiction in a fun and interactive way, like the THE MAGIC SCHOOL BUS series might also love OCEAN HIDE AND SEEK.
Now whet our appetites with a teaser. Please provide the first few lines or opening paragraph of your book.
The living sea is very wide
very wide, very wide.
So many places there to hide, where sand and restless sea collide.
Are you offering authors visits to schools, libraries, or other organizations?
Yes! Schools and libraries are my favorite places to be, especially now that I don’t have to worry about things like homework and getting in trouble with the principal.
Are you willing to speak nationally?
You bet, as long as it is limited to topics in which I am a self-professed expert, including writing (and rejection), my easily embarrassed children, my not easily embarrassed poodle, and of course, ice cream.
Other topics such as cooking, cleaning, and staying organized need not apply.
List a few example titles of presentations, talks, or workshops you might give for an author visit.
- Lights, Camo, Action!
- One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, ‘New’ Fish!
- Author Idol (”You’re going to Hollywood… NOT!”)
This concludes our interview with our latest author, JENNIFER KRAMER. We wish her much success with her picture book OCEAN HIDE AND SEEK
