*************************************************

This week, we’re celebrating Scotti Cohn’s debut! Scotti Cohn, author of One Wolf Howls, is a freelance writer and editor who started writing at an early age. In fourth grade, she received her first rejection letter from Walt Disney Studios for a book she and her best friend co-authored. Scotti’s short stories have appeared in numerous magazines for young people, and her poems about animals have appeared in Highlights for Children and Zootles magazines.
Scotti is also the author of six adult nonfiction titles published by The Globe Pequot Press, including It Happened in Chicago, scheduled for publication in August 2009. Currently Scotti is working on several picture book ideas along with a fantasy novel for young adults. Scotti has two adult children. She and her husband Ray share their home with five cats. However, Scotti also has a special place in her heart for dogs and their magnificent ancestor, the wolf. She enjoys sharing her enthusiasm about wolves with children in her school and library visits.

Here’s a little bit about ONE WOLF HOWLS (Sylvan Dell Publishing).

Spend a year in the world of wolves with Scotti Cohn and her picture book, One Wolf Howls! Written for ages 4-8, this adventurous children’s book uses the months of the year and the numbers 1 through 12 to introduce children to the behavior of wolves in natural settings. The lively, realistic illustrations of Susan Detwiler complement the rhyming text and bring each month to life.

If you had to give your book a movie rating: G through Rated R, which one would you give and why?

ONE WOLF HOWLS would be rated G. It is aimed specifically at children ages 4-8.

What topics, issues, or themes does your book address? What drove you to write about them?

ONE WOLF HOWLS arose out of an interest in wolves that became very strong about ten years ago. I didn’t really “decide” to write about wolves. The concept and words for ONE WOLF HOWLS formed in my mind in 2003, and I followed through. The book is designed to teach or reinforce counting skills (1-12) and an understanding of seasons (months of the year), while bringing the reader into the world of wolves to explore how they communicate, behave, and work together in a pack.

Name three examples of readers who would identify or like your book.

  • Children ages 4-8 who love animals and want to learn about them.
  • Children ages 4-8 who enjoy having books read aloud to them.
  • Children ages 4-8 who are learning to read and enjoy exercising their reading skills.

List a few statistically improbable phrases or sentences one might find in your book. These are phrases or sentences you might never find anywhere else.

  • Eight wolves dance in the August twilight — splash feet, paddle feet, prance by the lake.
  • Nine wolves hide on September hilltops — shy ones, sly ones, no one sees.

How can your book be used in the classroom?

One Wolf Howls is an ideal classroom resource that can be used to supplement math, science, or literature lessons in grades K-3. It is aligned to State Science and Math standards, National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Standards, National Science Education Standards, and National Geography Standards based on the story text and the “For Creative Minds” educational section. Cross-curricular “Teaching Activities,” English/ Spanish eBooks and audio, child-friendly “Related Websites,” and Comprehension and Math quizzes are also available.

Now tell us about other already-published books that readers of your book might enjoy.

  • Walk with a Wolf by Janni Howker (illustrated by Sarah Fox-Davies)
  • The Wolves Are Back by Jean Craighead George (paintings by Wendell Minor)
  • Look to the North: A Wolf Pup Diary by Jean Craighead George (illustrated by Lucia Washburn).
  • Wolves by Robyn Hood Black (illustrated by Colin Howard)
  • Runt by Marion Dane Bauer,
  • Kazan, Father of Baree by James Oliver Curwood
  • Julie of the Wolves by Jean Craighead George.

Now whet our appetites with a teaser.

One wolf howls in the January moonlight — night light, dim light, midnight sky. One wolf howls in the January moonlight, deep in the woods where the moon hangs high.

Are you offering authors visits to schools, libraries, or other organizations?

Yes.

Are you willing to speak nationally?

Yes.

List a few example titles of presentations, talks, or workshops you might give for an author visit.

  • A Year in the World of Wolves with Scotti and Lobo
  • Is There a Poem in the Picture?
  • Letting the Wolf in the Door

This concludes our interview with our latest author, SCOTTI COHN. We wish her much success with her debut novel ONE WOLF HOWLS. To see what Scotti is up to these days, visit her website at http://www.scotticohn.com or her blog at http://scotticohn.livejournal.com.

I have already bought and given this book to a couple of young children of professional acquaintances….and their respectively 5 and 3 year olds LOVE it. Both parents specifically commented on the September wolf and how cool it was to ‘find’ the hidden wolves. The parents were quite impressed at the teaching tool this will become. Cudos, Scotti!
